Michael Goodwin (Emory University):
Senior Michael Goodwin of Emory University closed out his college career by capturing the men's singles title at the 2009 NCAA Division III Championships over the weekend. Goodwin, who was seeded fifth in the 32-player field became the first player in the programs history to win an individual national championship. He defeated his opponent from Bates College, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 to win the title. His efforts closed out an outstanding four-year career that saw him earn All-America honors on nine occasions while ranking among the school's all-time top 10 performers with 75 singles victories.
Other Notable Performances
Will Zhang (Chicago) reached the quarterfinals of the 2009 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Singles Championship. He defeated his opponent from Williams College 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-2 in the round of 16 before falling Gustavus Adolphus College 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Zhang finished the year with a 18-9 overall record.
