UAA Athlete of the Week MM• Priya Srikanth (Washington): The senior successfully defended her one-meter and three-meter springboard titles in repeating as Diver of the Year at the 2008 UAA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by the University of Rochester at the Webster Aquatic Center. Srikanth established a UAA record in winning the one-meter title, totaling an NCAA Division III-qualifying score of 487.10 points, and captured the three-meter crown two days later with a Division III-qualifying score of 444.10 points. MM• Ruth Westby (Emory): The sophomore captured three individual championships and swam on a pair of victorious relays in garnering Swimmer of the Year honors at the 2008 UAA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by the University of Rochester. Westby became the first UAA female swimmer to sweep the freestyle sprint events, establishing Association meet records in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles to go with her crown in the 200-yard freestyle. Her times in the two longer distances surpassed NCAA Division III automatic qualifying marks. Westby also swam the anchor leg on the Eagles’ winning 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays. UAA Athlete of the Week MM• Ellen Flader (Emory): The senior turned in a pair of top-five finishes in the breaststroke events during a triangular dual meet with host University of North Carolina, the tenth-ranked team in NCAA Division I, and seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins University. Flader posted a Division III provisional qualifying time with a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.46), and later finished third at 200 yards with a time of 2:27.27. The second-ranked Eagles defeated Johns Hopkins, 175-93, while dropping a 165-82 decision to the Tar Heels. MM• Melanie Peters (NYU): The senior captain swept both springboard diving events for the second straight meet in helping the Violets defeat host Vassar College, 183-107, to complete the 2007-08 dual meet campaign with a perfect 11-0 record. Peters surpassed NCAA Division III qualifying standards in winning both the one-meter dive (262.88 points) and the three-meter event (292.05 points).
MM• Sara Andrews (Carnegie Mellon): The sophomore won two individual events and swam on a winning relay in helping the Tartans claim their own five-team Carnegie Mellon University Invitational with 592 points over four NCAA Division II teams. Andrews won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.75), recorded a season-best time in capturing the 200-yard breaststroke (2:32.23), and swam the second leg of the victorious 200-yard medley relay (1:52.14). MM• Ellie Elgamal (Chicago): The freshman notched school records in the 100-yard butterfly (57.72 seconds) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.37) as the Maroons dropped a 166-121 decision to 15th-ranked DePauw University. Elgamal’s time in the 100 butterfly was good for first place, while her performance in the 200 IM placed second. MM• Rachel Sawicki (Brandeis): The sophomore won the 50-yard (27.01 seconds) and 200-yard (2:08.32) freestyles, and captured the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.53, missing the school record by 0.20 seconds) in helping the Judges to a 160-122 win over Worcester Polytechnic Institute in their final dual meet of the regular season. She also swam the team's fastest leg (59.37 seconds) on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay. MM• Dorota Sawicz (NYU): The senior won the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.49) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.60) in contributing to a 183-107 win at Vassar College. The Violets completed the 2007-08 dual meet season with an unblemished 11-0 record. MM• Danielle Scherry (Rochester): The senior won the 500-yard (5:28.33) and 1,000-yard (10:59.39) freestyles in leading the Yellowjackets to a 157-84 triumph over Rochester Institute of Technology. MM• Jaime Sorenson (Rochester): The sophomore was victorious in the one-meter (205.40 points) and three-meter (232.15 points) springboard diving events in helping the Yellowjackets to a 157-84 triumph over Rochester Institute of Technology. UAA Athlete of the Week MM• Lillian Ciardelli (Emory): The sophomore was a part of three NCAA Division III provisional qualifying performances during a triangular meet with host Division I Georgia Institute of Technology (167-78 loss) and Vanderbilt University (173-105 win). Ciardelli turned in third-place finishes in both the 50-yard freestyle (24.38 seconds) and the 100-yard butterfly (58.36 seconds), and swam the third leg of the runner-up 200-yard medley relay (1:48.65). MM• Molly Evans (Carnegie Mellon): The Tartan freshman established NCAA Division III provisional qualifying times in winning a pair of events during a 108-95 dual victory over Westminster College (PA). Evans posted her fifth school record of the season with her victory in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.59) and improved on her career-best time in capturing the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.70). MM• Melanie Peters (NYU): The junior won both diving events as the Violets (10-0) defeated The College of New Jersey, 169-128, in their final home dual meet of the season. Beck captured the three-meter dive with an NCAA Division III qualifying score of 273.30 points, and won the one-meter springboard with a score of 250.05 points.
MM• Patricia Beck (NYU): The sophomore recorded first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.28) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.10), and swam a let on the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:52.20) to help lead the Violets to a 169-128 triumph over the College of New Jersey. MM• Ellie Elgamal (Chicago): The freshman posted a school record and NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying time of 2:08.42 in capturing the 200-yard butterfly, and was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly (58.92) and 200-yard individual medley (2:14.27) as the Maroons defeated 23rd-ranked Carthage College (185-100) and fell to eighth-ranked Wheaton (IL) College (148-139). MM• Janine Machala (Case): The junior swam the third leg on the victorious 400-yard medley relay (4:16.43), then picked up a key victory in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.91) to secure the Spartans' 124-115 non-conference triumph over Wittenberg University. MM• Liz Subjeck (Rochester): The freshman won the 200-yard (2:00.90) and 500-yard (5:27.25) freestyles and swam a leg on the runner-up 400-yard freestyle relay (3:45.64) in the Yellowjackets' 135.5-109.5 dual loss to Ithaca College. MM• Jaime Sorenson (Rochester): The sophomore captured both the one-meter (202.80 points) and three-meter (199.87) springboards for the Yellowjackets during a 135.5-109.5 dual loss to Ithaca College. MM• Hollis Viray (Brandeis): The sophomore established a school record in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:44.91, winning the event by more than 20 seconds, in helping the Judges to a 137-100 victory over Clark University. Viray also captured the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:59.87) and finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:23.29). UAA Athlete of the Week MM• Meredith Nordbrock (Washington): The senior won three individual events, posting NCAA Division III provisional qualifying times in two, and swam on two victorious relays in leading the Bears to top honors in their own Washington University Invitational. Nordbrock established NCAA qualifying marks in winning the 400-yard individual medley (4:33.06) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.85). She also won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.17), missing out on meeting her third NCAA “B” cut by just 0.06 seconds. Nordbrock was also a member of the Bears’ first-place 200-yard medley relay (1:51.74) and 800-yard freestyle relay (8:01.92). MM• Priya Srikanth (Washington): The senior diver swept the one-meter and three-meter springboard events during the two-day Washington University Invitational, posting NCAA Division III qualifying marks in both events for the second straight week. Srikanth tallied 447.90 points in the one-meter dive and totaled 476.15 points at three meters. Both scores rank among the top ten in the nation for their respective event.
MM• Patricia Beck (NYU): The sophomore won the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.04) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.31), and swam a leg on the victorious 400-yard medley relay (4:05.88) in leading the unbeaten Violets (9-0) to a 151-92 triumph over Springfield College. MM• Molly Evans (Carnegie Mellon): The freshman improved on her school-record time in the 100-yard backstroke during the Tartans' 162-129 dual win over Allegheny College. Evans won the event with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 58.51 seconds, the fourth fastest time to date in the nation for the event. MM• Morgan Klinzing (Emory): The freshman posted top-five finishes in two individual events and swam on a victorious relay to help the Eagles (6-1) to a 133-73 dual triumph over Wingate University, the 23rd ranked team in NCAA Division II. Klinzing captured the 100-yard freestyle (:54.42) and finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (:24.87), while swimming a leg on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay. MM• Charlotte Rea (Brandeis): The senior diver won the one-meter springboard with an NCAA qualifying score of 423.30 points during a 164-134 dual loss to Wheaton College (MA). Rea posted the top score of 185.50 in the required dives, then tallied 237.80 points in the optionals (six additional dives). MM• Hollis Viray (Brandeis): The sophomore won the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.77), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:31.01), and the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.00) for the Judges in a 164-134 loss to Wheaton College (MA). Viray also swam the leadoff leg on the winning 400-yard medley relay, turning in a 1:08.60 backstroke split. MM• Kelsey Zeller (Case): The freshman captured the 500-yard (5:26.90) and 1,000-yard (11:17.59) freestyles in the Spartans' 121-118 loss to host Ohio Northern University. UAA Athlete of the Week MM• Ellie Elgamal (Chicago): The freshman won three individual events and was a member of a winning relay team as the Maroons defeated visiting Kalamazoo College, 175-108, in dual meet competition. Elgamal set a school and pool record in the 100-yard butterfly with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 57.84 seconds, the fifth-fastest time to date in Division III. She also led the way in the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.15) and 200-yard freestyle (2:01.98) and swam a leg of the 200-yard medley relay (1:55.40). MM• Priya Srikanth (Washington): The senior established season-best dual meet scores and surpassed the NCAA Division III qualifying standards in capturing both diving events during the Bears’ 156-77 win over Lindenwood University. Srikanth won the one-meter springboard with a score of 246.15 points and claimed the three-meter springboard with 269.10 points.
MM• Cailee Caldwell (Rochester): The freshman tallied top-five finishes in six events (four individual, two relays) during back-to-back weekend dual meets for the Yellowjackets. In a 177.50-117.50 loss at the State University of New York at Cortland, Caldwell won the 200-yard individual medley (2:23.53), finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.89), and swam a leg on the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay (3:51.45). In the 138-104 loss to Nazareth College, she claimed the 100-yard freestyle (56.66 seconds), finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (:26.17), and swam on the runner-up 800-yard freestyle relay (8:17.66). MM• Molly Evans (Carnegie Mellon): The freshman won two events and was part of a victorious relay for the Tartans in a 120-85 dual triumph over host and Association rival Case Western Reserve University. Evans posted her fourth school record of the season with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:32.23) and captured the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.27), while swimming a leg on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.14). MM• Janine Machala (Case): The junior was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.20) during a 120-85 dual loss to UAA foe Carnegie Mellon University. MM• Tess Pasternak (Emory): Competing in her first meet of the 2007-08 season, the junior claimed first place in the 100-yard (1:01.17) and 200-yard (2:11.84) backstrokes and swam the leadoff leg of the victorious 200-yard medley relay (1:52.41) for the Eagles (5-1) in a 190-71 dual-meet victory over NCAA Division II University of Tampa. MM• Jamie Sorenson (Rochester): The sophomore posted top-three finishes on the one-meter and three-meter springboards during back-to-back weekend dual meets for the Yellowjackets. Sorenson finished second on the three-meter board (225.68 points) and third on the one-meter board (182.10) in a 177.50-117.50 loss at the State University of New York at Cortland. Versus Nazareth College (138-104 loss), she captured the three-meter dive (215.03 points) and finished second in the one-meter event (194.18). UAA Athlete of the Week MM• Liz Horvat (Emory): The freshman recorded five NCAA Division III qualifying times during the three-day Miami University (OH) Invitational. Horvat posted automatic qualifying times in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:16.80), good for a sixth-place finish, and the 400-yard individual medley (4:28.13), placing tenth. She rounded out the meet with three provisional qualifying times, finishing fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.95), sixth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.42), and seventh as part of the Eagles’ 400-yard freestyle relay (3:33.60). MM• Jacki Powers (Emory): The senior turned in top-three finishes in the diving events to help the Eagles to a 145-81 dual meet win over the University of the South. Powers captured the three-meter springboard with a score of 257.40 points, missing the NCAA Division III qualifying standard by eight points. She finished second in the one-meter event with 230.40 points.
MM• Patricia Beck (NYU): The sophomore produced top three finishes in four individual events and swam on a winning relay in helping the Violets to their fourth straight Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship in East Meadow, NY. Beck posted NCAA Division III provisional qualifying times in winning the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.87), finishing second in the 400-yard individual medley (4:38.70), and placing third in the 100-yard backstroke (:59.87). Beck, also won the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.27) and swam a leg on the Violets' victorious 800-yard freestyle relay (7:55.07), which set a meet and school record. MM• Molly Evans (Carnegie Mellon): The freshman continued her march through the Tartan record book with performances during the three-day Kenyon College/Nike Cup. Evans set the school record in the 400-yard individual medley in the preliminary heats with a time of 4:33.75 on Friday, turned in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.83), and posted an automatic qualifying time with a third-place effort in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.71), bettering her previous school record in the event by one second. Evans also swam legs on the school-record breaking 800-yard freestyle (7:52.40) and 400-yard medley (4:01.02) relays, while the 200-yard medley relay (1:51.45) missed a school record by .30 seconds. MM• Kathryn Lukens (Rochester): The freshman was victorious in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the Liberty League Championships in Schenectady, NY, posting a time of 18:14.23. MM• Meredith Nordbrock (Washington): The senior posted NCAA Division III qualifying time in three individual events and a relay at the Wheaton College (IL) Invitational. Nordbrock established a new school record and an NCAA automatic qualifying time in capturing the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:30.16, and was also victorious in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.94) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.20), both of which were NCAA provisional qualifying times. Nordbrock was also a member of the Bears’ victorious 800-yard freestyle relay, which posted a provisional qualifying time of 7:41.52. MM• Hollis Viray (Brandeis): The sophomore was the top performer for the Judges at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Invitational, reaching the finals in five individual events and swimming on a relay. Viray placed fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.66) and sixth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:22.46) on day one of competition, then finished fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.86), fifth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:55.31) and seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.56) on day two. She also anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay to an eighth place finish with a time of 1:46.42. UAA Athlete of the Week MM• Molly Evans (Carnegie Mellon): The freshman won three individual events, establishing school records and NCAA Division III provisional qualifying times in two, in helping the Tartans to three dual victories in their own quadrangular invitational over the weekend. Evans improved her season-best times in capturing the 100-yard backstroke (:58.55) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.22), setting new school records and surpassing NCAA Division III provisional qualifying times, and also claimed the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.40) as Carnegie Mellon defeated Franklin & Marshall College, Washington & Lee University, and UAA rival University of Rochester. MM• Priya Srikanth (Washington): The senior diver easily surpassed NCAA Division III qualifying standards in winning the one-meter and three-meter springboards during the Washington University Thanksgiving Invitational. Srikanth compiled 468.50 points in the one-meter event, breaking an eight-year-old school record of 425.25 points and surpassing the NCAA qualifying standard by nearly 74 points, while her winning score of 467.20 points in the three-meter event is more than 50 points better than the qualifying mark in that event.
MM• Patricia Beck (NYU): The sophomore was victorious in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.46) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.40), and swam on the winning 400-yard medley relay (4:10.69) as the Violets remained unbeaten in their dual schedule (8-0) with a 131-74 triumph over Swarthmore College. MM• Liz Horvat (Emory): The freshman finished first in both the 1,000-yard (10:37.35) and 200-yard (1:58.62) freestyles in helping the Eagles to a 145-48 dual meet win over Darton College. MM• Charlotte Jennings (Carnegie Mellon): The junior captured the one-meter (227.47 points) and three-meter (251.16 points) diving events for the Tartans during the Carnegie Mellon Quadrangular Duals. MM• Jessie Lodewyk (Washington): The sophomore won three individual events and was a member of two first-place relay teams at the Washington University Thanksgiving Invitational. Lodewyk won the 500-yard (5:19.30) and 1,650-yard (18:09.39) freestyles, and added the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.85) . She swam the anchor leg on the Bears' 400-yard medley relay (4:10.24) and swam the third leg on 400-yard freestyle relay (3:42.16). MM• Chelsea Murphy (Emory): The sophomore captured the one-meter (225.23 points) and three-meter (204.68) springboard dives to help the Eagles post a 145-48 victory in a dual meet with Darton College. MM• Hollis Viray (Brandeis): The sophomore swam the second-fastest time in school history (11:01.37) with her runner-up finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a 133-103 loss to NCAA Division II Bentley College. Viray also placed second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.52) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.28). UAA Athlete of the Week MM• Marie Kim (Emory): The freshman recorded NCAA Division III provisional qualifying times in two individual events and a relay during the Emory University Fall Invitational. Competing against a number of the top club teams in the region, Kim finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke in a provisional qualifying time of 1:07.50, followed with a fifth-place showing in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.69), and swam the second leg of the Eagles’ runner-up 400-yard medley relay, which posting a provisional qualifying time of 4:00.20. MM• Priya Srikanth (Washington): The senior diver established NCAA Division III qualifying scores in winning the one-meter and three-meter diving events at the University of Chicago Maroon Invitational. Srikanth, the reigning UAA Diver of the Year, registered pool records in both events, compiling 477.25 points in the three-meter event, and totaling 416.8 points in the one-meter springboard.
MM• Ellie Elgamal (Chicago): The freshman set school and pool records in one individual event and swam legs on two school record-setting relay teams as the Maroons won their nine-team University of Chicago Maroon Invitational. Elgamal posted school and pool marks in winning the 100-yard butterfly (:58.06) and swam legs on the victorious 200-yard medley relay (1:53.12) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:45.94). MM• Molly Evans (Carnegie Mellon): The freshman won a pair of individual events in helping the Tartans post a 180-133 win at Grove City College, setting a school record in winning the 100-yard backstroke (:58.58) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.66). MM• Nora Hoefer (Rochester): The sophomore won three individual events and swam on a winning relay in a 1-1 weekend for the Yellowjackets. In a dual loss at Union College, Hoefer won the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.83), finished third in the 100-yard freestyle (:56.51), and swam on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay (3:45.84). In the victory over St. Lawrence University the following day, she was first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.40) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.08). MM• Meredith Nordbrock (Washington): The senior won an individual event and anchored two first-place relay teams at the University of Chicago Maroon Invitational. Nordbrock turned in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time in winning the 400-yard individual medley (4:35.17), placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.25), and swam legs on the Bears' 200-yard (1:43.36) and 800-yard (8:04.66) freestyle relays. MM• Chelsea Pfohl (NYU): The freshman captured the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.25) and 100-yard butterfly (:59.71), and swam a leg on the victorious 200-yard medley relay (1:53.25) as the Violets defeated the United States Coast Guard Academy (235.5-64.5) and Wheaton College of Massachusetts (20-80) to remain unbeaten in dual competition with a 7-0 record. MM• Charlotte Rea (Brandeis): The senior diver established an NCAA Division III qualifying score on the one-meter springboard in the Judges' 114-58 win over Babson College. Rea totaled 418.70 points, scoring 182.05 on the voluntary dives and 236.65 in the optionals. MM• Kelsey Zeller (Case): The freshman won four freestyle events in leading the Spartans to a pair of dual victories during the two-day Case Western Reserve University Veale Classic. Zeller won the 200-yard (2:01.65) and 500-yard freestyles (5:21.68) in a 127-100 triumph over Oberlin College. The following day, she claimed the 1,650-yard (18:44.06) and 500-yard freestyles (5:26.55) in leading the Spartans to a 123-108 win over the College of Wooster. UAA Athlete of the Week MM• Marie Kim (Emory): The freshman Marie Kim was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.36) and swam on the winning 400-yard medley relay (4:06.34) in helping the Eagles to a 107-89 dual win over Savannah College of Art & Design. MM• Melanie Peters (NYU): The junior captured both the one-meter (235.05 points) and three-meter (248.55) springboards to highlight the Violets’ 155-85 victory over Rowan University. UAA Athlete of the Week MM• Molly Evans (Carnegie Mellon): The freshman made her intercollegiate debut with three event wins, a pair of NCAA Division III provisional qualifying times, and a school record during a dual meet with NCAA Division II Clarion University. Evans’ school record and first provisional qualifier came in the 200-yard backstroke, where her time of 2:05.71 bested the previous school record by more than seven seconds. She posted her second provisional qualifying time in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.96) and finished the day with a win in the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 2:11.92. MM• Jaqueline Powers (Emory): The senior captured both the one-meter and three-meter springboards during a dual meet against NCAA Division I University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Powers recorded a score of 210.08 points in the one-meter dive and followed with a first-place score of 253.05 points in the three-meter event, missing the NCAA Division III qualifying standard by 1.95 points. Powers scored 18 of the Eagles’ points in a 164-132 loss.
