UAA Athlete of the Week

OFFENSE

Robert Gimson (Carnegie Mellon): The senior halfback ran for a game-high 161 yards on 27 carries and scored a career-high three touchdowns to help lead the Tartans to a 39-21 victory over Washington & Lee University.  Gimson, who surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the second straight season on his final carry of the game (a 35-yard touchdown run), headed a backfield that ran for 315 yards.


DEFENSE

Tommy Bawden (Washington): The junior defensive back returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown in the Bears’ season-ending 30-20 win at Greenville College. The 100-yard interception return tied a school record set in 1948 against Grinnell College. Bawden also added six tackles, including 1.5 for lost yardage, in the victory.

MMTom Brew (Case): The senior linebacker made a team-high 14 tackles, recovered a fumble, and registered a pass breakup in the Spartans’ 20-17 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University.  The win completed an undefeated 10-0 campaign, earning the program’s first NCAA Division III Football Championship berth.  Brew made the game’s final tackle, ending a potential game-winning drive by Ohio Wesleyan, to secure the undefeated season.

Sam Coffey (Case): The freshman place kicker converted two of three field goal attempts, including a game-winning 23-yard kick with 1:34 to play in the fourth quarter, in helping the Spartans to a 20-17 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University, completing a perfect 10-0 regular season and earning their first ever berth to the NCAA Division III Championship.  Coffey, who also connected on a 42-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, has hit a school-record 10 field goals on the season, and finished  2-for-2 in extra-point attempts, improving to 97-percent on the year.

Corey Checkan and Greg Meyer (Case): The sophomore running back duo accounted for the majority of Case’s 146 rushing yards in a 20-17 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University, securing a perfect 10-0 regular season and earning the Spartans’ first NCAA Division III Championship berth. The tandem combined for 114 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown.  Checkan rushed 14 times for 73 yards (5.2 yards per carry), picking up a pair of pivotal first downs on the Spartans final drive, to set a game-winning field goal.  Meyer compiled 41 yards on 14 carries, scoring the game’s opening touchdown late in the second quarter.

MM John Kiernan (Chicago): The junior quarterback threw a pair of touchdown passes and rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown as the Maroons routed Eureka College, 51-6 in their season finale.  Kiernan, who was 7-for-15 for 109 yards without an interception, threw scoring strikes of 22 and 53 yards and scored on a 45-yard run.

MM Matt Koenigsknecht (Washington): The senior wide receiver had four catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears’ 30-20 win at Greenville College. Koenigsknect had a 29-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter, and then hauled in a 66-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Buck Smith in the fourth quarter.


DEFENSE

Tony Insalaco (Chicago): The senior linebacker collected 10 tackles, with a quarterback sack, in helping a Maroon defense hold Eureka College to just 120 yards of total offense in a 51-6 victory.

UAA Athlete of the Week

OFFENSE

Travis Sivek (Carnegie Mellon): The senior fullback ran for 131 yards on 21 carries with three touchdowns to help lead the Tartans to a 42-19 victory over Bethany College of West Virginia.  His three touchdowns moved him into 20th place on the NCAA Division III career-scoring list with 348 points.  He needs 24 yards to reach the 4,000-yard milestone for his career.

MMShaun Nicely (Case): The freshman wide receiver caught 12 passes for 166 yards and three touchdowns, all career highs, to help the Spartans claim their first outright UAA championship with a 35-27 victory over Washington University.  Nicely caught touchdown passes of 50, 33, and 22 yards, the latter coming late in the third quarter to give Case the lead for good.

Tom Brew (Case): The Spartan senior linebacker made a game-high 15 tackles, including three for-a loss of four yards, in a 35-27 victory over Washington University.  The victory clinched the first outright UAA championship for the Spartans and advanced their perfect record to 9-0.  Brew also blocked a Washington extra-point on the game’s opening score.

Matt Adams (Carnegie Mellon): The senior punter averaged 48.3 yards on three punts, including a long of 63 yards, in the Tartans’ 42-19 victory over Bethany College (WV).  Adams placed two of his punts inside the Bison 20-yard line, marking the 16th and 17th time this season.

Jon Scholl (Carnegie Mellon): The senior defensive back made a team-high 10 tackles (eight solo) and registered one of the Tartans' three interceptions in a 42-19 win over Bethany College (WV). His interception in the end zone in the opening minutes of the third quarter stopped a Bethany drive that would have pulled them to within a touchdown.

Dan Whalen (Case): The sophomore averaged 35.8 yards on nine punts, including a long of 48 yards, in helping the Spartans capture their first outright UAA championship with a 35-27 win over visiting Washington University. Whalen also completed 20 of 29 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

UAA Athlete of the Week

OFFENSE

Dan Whalen (Case): The sophomore quarterback accounted for all of the scoring for the undefeated Spartans during a 35-3 road win over the University of Chicago.  Whalen accounted for nearly half of the Spartans’ 65-play, 350 yards of total offense, completing 15 of 28 passes for 163 yards and four touchdowns and rushing nine times for 61 yards and a touchdown.  His five touchdowns tied for the most points scored in a Case football game since 2003, while his four touchdown passes were one shy of the UAA single game record.


DEFENSE
MMAndrew Berryman (Washington): The sophomore linebacker made a career-high 23 tackles, including 20 assisted tackles and 1.5 tackles for lost yardage, in the Bears’ 18-13 loss at Carnegie Mellon University.  Berryman, who entered the game with 20 tackles in the previous seven games, is fourth on the team with 43 tackles.

Matt Adams (Carnegie Mellon): The senior punter averaged 40.0 yards on five punts as the Tartans kept their hopes for a share of the UAA title alive with an 18-13 victory over Washington University.  Adams placed two punts inside the Bears’ 20-yard-line, with the first bouncing out of bounds at the two-yard-line to set up a Carnegie Mellon safety on the next play.

MM Travis Sivek (Carnegie Mellon): The senior fullback ran for 122 yards on 36 carries with a touchdown to help lead the Tartans to an 18-13 victory over Washington University, keeping their hopes of a share of the UAA title alive. His touchdown came on the Tartans' first possession of the second half and gave Carnegie Mellon the lead for good.  His 122 yards marked the second time he has rushed for at least 100 yards against the Bears and is just the ninth opposing back to reach the feat in the Bears’ last 88 games.

Jeff Brown (Case): The sophomore linebacker made a team-high 10 tackles and added an interception and a sack for a loss of three yards in a 35-3 Case victory over the University of Chicago.

SPECIAL TEAMS
MMJim O’Brien (Washington): The freshman returned three kickoffs for 87 yards, including a career-long 37 return, in the Bears’ 18-13 loss at Carnegie Mellon University. O’Brien leads the team with 13 returns for 304 yards, a 23.4 average.

UAA Athlete of the Week

OFFENSE
MMCorey Checkan (Case):
The junior fullback rushed 12 times for 69 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-0 victory over St. Vincent College. He averaged 5.8 yards per carry with longest run of the day coming on a 19-yard pickup.


DEFENSE

Jonathan Bodnar (Carnegie Mellon): The senior outside linebacker Jonathan Bodnar headed a defense that held the University of Chicago to 73 yards rushing in a 21-0 victory in Chicago.  Bodnar led the defense with six tackles while recording one of the Tartans’ four interceptions.  He also had one tackle for a loss of two yards.

Dan Whalen (Case): The sophomore averaged 41.5 yards on two punts, including a long of 47 yards, in a 42-0 Case victory over St. Vincent College. .Whalen also completed 13 of 17 passes for 155 yards and one touchdown and ran for 23 yards and a touchdown on six carries in only two quarters of work.

Travis Sivek (Carnegie Mellon): The senior fullback rushed for 111 yards on 29 carries with a pair of touchdowns in leading the Tartans to a 21-0 victory at the University of Chicago. His second score came on the last play of the third quarter to secure the Tartan victory.  Sivek now has 11 rushing touchdowns this season and a school-record 54 for his career.

Brian Calderone (Case): The junior defensive end made six tackles, including two and a half tackles for a loss of five yards, in the Spartans' 42-0 win over St. Vincent College. Calderone also recorded a pass breakup and assisted on a quarterback sack.

UAA Athlete of the Week

Travis Sivek (Carnegie Mellon): The senior fullback compiled a season-high 141 yards on 37 carries in the Tartans’ 20-17 loss to Case Western Reserve University in the 22nd annual “Academic Bowl,” the UAA opener for both teams.  Sivek scored the lone offensive touchdown for Carnegie Mellon, giving the Tartans a 17-10 lead with 9:23 to play in the third quarter.

Tom Brew (Case): The senior linebacker made a game-high 21 tackles and blocked a point-after attempt in the third quarter to help the Spartans post a 20-17 overtime win over host Carnegie Mellon University in the 22nd annual “Academic Bowl,” the UAA season opener for both teams.

Sam Coffey (Case): The freshman place kicker nailed a 30-yard game-winning field goal in overtime to give the undefeated Spartans (6-0) a 20-17 win over host Carnegie Mellon University in the 22nd annual “Academic Bowl,” the UAA opener for both teams.  Coffey, who finished with a pair of field goals and converted two point-after attempts, has made eight of 10 field goals and converted 29 of 30 extra points (96.7 percent) to rank second in the Association in scoring with 53 points (8.8 points per game).

MM Tyler McSparin (Washington):
The senior linebacker returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown and registered a game-high 10 tackles in the Bears' 31-10 win over the University of Chicago in the annual "Founders Cup" game. McSparin also added a forced fumble in the win as Washington improved to 6-1 for the first time since 1995.

SPECIAL TEAMS
MM Tommy Bawden (Washington): The junior averaged 36.7 yards on six punts in the Bears’ 31-10 victory over the University of Chicago in the annual "Founders Cup" game. Bawden also had a 19-yard run on a fake punt in the third quarter to keep a drive alive.

UAA Athlete of the Week

OFFENSE

Matt Glenn (Washington): The sophomore running back ran for a career-high 43 yards on six carries with two touchdowns in the Bears’ 33-10 win over LaGrange College.  His five-yard score with 9:06 to play in the second quarter capped an eight-play, 41-yard drive, and his 14-yard run with 4:32 remaining in the game ended a four-play, 37 yard drive.  Glenn leads the team and the UAA with eight touchdowns.

DEFENSE

Tim Machan (Washington): The sophomore defensive back surpassed a 24-year-old school record after returning his team-leading sixth interception of the year 51 yards in the Bears’ 33-10 win over LaGrange College.  He has compiled 172 yards on interception returns, shattering the school record of 132 yards set in 1973.  Machan, who also leads the UAA and ranks sixth in NCAA Division III in interceptions, also accounted for the game’s opening score on an 81-yard fumble return in the second quarter.

Matt Adams (Carnegie Mellon): The senior punter averaged 35.2 yards on four punts in the Tartans’ 21-10 loss at Randolph-Macon College.  Adams placed two punts inside the Yellow Jackets 20-yard line marking.

UAA Athlete of the Week

OFFENSE

Marshall Oium (Chicago): The freshman quarterback, making his first career start, completed 26 of 39 passes for 362 yards and three touchdowns as the Maroons posted their second consecutive win with a 57-27 win over Lewis & Clark College of Oregon.  Oium, who threw passes to six different receivers during the game, sparked a Chicago offense that tallied 603 yards of total offense.

DEFENSE

Brian Calderone (Case): The junior defensive tackle made seven tackles, 2.5 of them coming for a loss of 16 yards, recovered a fumble, and registered a quarterback sack in helping the Spartans to a 52-13 victory over Gallaudet University.  Calderone and his fellow linemates held the Bison to only 67 yards rushing.


SPECIAL TEAMS

Sam Coffey (Case): The freshman place kicker finished 7-for-7 in extra-point conversions and nailed a 19-yard field goal as time expired in the first half as the Spartans remained undefeated on the season (5-0) and extended their winning streak to six games (dating back to the season finale in 2006) with a 52-13 triumph over Gallaudet University.  Coffey has made six of eight field goals on the season and is 27-for-28 on extra point opportunities.

Tim Cowdrick (Case): The sophomore wide receiver caught ten passes for 211 yards, both career highs, as the Spartans defeated Gallaudet University, 52-13 to improve to 5-0 on the year. Cowdrick ranks as the top receiver to date in the UAA, with 37 catches for 591 yards (118.2 yards per game) and two touchdowns.

MMBuck Smith (Washington): The junior quarterback completed 19 of 30 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns as the Bears improved to 4-1 for the first time since 2001 with a 24-3 win over Rhodes College. He also made his first career reception, an 18-yards catch to set up a first down. Smith has eclipsed 1,000 passing yards (1,014) for the season, and ranks second in the UAA in yards per game average (202.8).

SPECIAL TEAMS
MMMichael Elliott (Washington): The senior place kicker was 3-for-3 in point after attempts and booted a career-best 37-yard field goal in the Bears’ 24-3 win over Rhodes College. Elliott also added two assisted tackles on special teams, covering kickoffs.

UAA Athlete of the Week

OFFENSE

Buck Smith (Washington): The junior quarterback completed 30 of 52 passes for 268 yards and a game-winning touchdown as the Bears scored 10 points in the final quarter for   a 16-13 upset victory at 14th-ranked North Central College.  Smith connected with senior Joe Lubelski for a 14-yard touchdown pass with 2:17 remaining as Washington posted its first win against a ranked team since 2001. Through three games, Smith has passed for 786 yards and six touchdowns, and ranks second in the UAA in passing yards per game (196.5)

DEFENSE

Gaby Fernandez (Chicago): The senior linebacker intercepted three passes, all in the second half, as the Maroons defeated Macalester College, 21-13.  His first of two fourth-quarter picks stopped the Scots inside the Chicago red zone with 11:55 remaining.  He then intercepted a pass near midfield to stall the Scots’ next drive at the 5:47 mark. Fernandez, who finished with eight tackles on the day, was also credited with a forced fumble, giving him four takeaways.

Sam Coffey (Case): The freshman place kicker connected on three of four field goals, including a long of 37 yards, and was perfect in extra-point attempts (3-for-3) as the Spartans remained undefeated (4-0) with a 30-17 win over the College of Wooster.  Coffey has hit 71.4 percent (5-for-7) of his field goals this season and has made 21 of 22 extra points, including 18 in a row.  He is ranked third in the UAA in scoring, averaging 8.8 points per game.

Brendan Howe (Carnegie Mellon): The sophomore receiver made seven catches for 96 yards, both career highs, and scored his first career touchdown as the Tartans dropped a 24-21 decision to Allegheny College.

MMThomas Parks (Chicago): The freshman running back gained a career-high 135 yards on 23 carries as the Maroons defeated Macalester College, 21-13.  Parks’ 20-yard touchdown run gave the Maroons a 14-7 edge midway through in the first half.

MMDan Whalen (Case): The sophomore quarterback combined for 369 yards of total offense as the Spartans defeated the College of Wooster, 30-17, marking the first win over the Scots in thirteen years. Whalen completed 21 of 40 passes for 286 yards and a touchdown, and ran for 83 yards on 16 carries. He has registered 200-plus yards of total offense in every game this season and is first in the UAA with 218 yards passing per game and eight touchdowns.

DEFENSE
MMJeff Brown (Case): The sophomore linebacker registered three sacks as the undefeated Spartans scored their first win over the College of Wooster in 13 years, posting a 30-17 triumph over the Scots. Brown finished with nine tackles, including 3.5 tackles for a loss of 27 yards.

MMDan Mulholland (Washington): The freshman defensive lineman made two tackles, including his first career sack, a fumble recovery, and an interception in the Bears’ 16-13 upset win at 14th-ranked North Central College. With Washington trailing 13-9 in the fourth quarter, his interception set up the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

SPECIAL TEAMS
MMMatt Adams (Carnegie Mellon): The senior punter averaged 48.5 yards on four punts in the Tartans' 24-21 loss to Allegheny College.  Adams placed two of his punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line and recorded a school record 70-yard punt.

UAA Athlete of the Week

Dan Whalen (Case): The sophomore quarterback totaled 200-plus yards of total offense for the third consecutive week as the Spartans remain undefeated (3-0) on the season with a 49-26 victory over Kenyon College.  Whalen compiled 248 yards of total offense and accounted for five touchdowns in the victory, completing 10 of 11 passes for 174 yards and four touchdowns, and rushing seven times for 74 yards and a touchdown.  Whalen has seven touchdown throws on the year and a 168.2 pass efficiency rating.

DEFENSE

Jeff Brown (Case): The sophomore linebacker made eleven tackles, recovered a fumble, and returned an interception 60 yards to set up a touchdown as the Spartans advanced to 3-0 on the season with a 49-26 win over Kenyon College.  Brown was part of a Spartan defense that forced four turnovers (two fumbles, two interceptions).


SPECIAL TEAMS

Sam Coffey (Case): The freshman place kicker converted seven of seven extra-point attempts in a 49-26 victory over Kenyon College.  Coffey has converted 15 straight extra-point opportunities, and has made 17 of 18 attempts through three games.

The senior fullback rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns in the Tartans' 27-26 loss at Hobart College.  Sivek averaged 4.0 yards per carry and recorded his 14th multi touchdown game for his career.

UAA Athlete of the Week

OFFENSE
MMJohn Kiernan (Chicago):
The junior quarterback compiled 282 yards of total offense and accounted for four touchdowns as the Maroons kicked off the 2007 season with a 41-10 triumph over Concordia University Chicago.  Making his first start at quarterback, Kiernan completed 12 of 24 passes with no interceptions for 158 yards and two touchdowns.  He also ran 15 times for 158 yards with a pair of touchdowns in leading a Chicago offensive attack that amassed 466 yards and scored six touchdowns.

DEFENSE

Richard Hauffe (Carnegie Mellon): The senior defensive lineman recorded a career-high nine tackles, five of them coming for lost yardage, and accounted for 3.5 of the Tartans’ seven total sacks in a 16-6 win over Grove City College.  Hauffe was part of a Carnegie Mellon offense that held the Wolverines to five yards on the ground and 243 yards of total offense.

MMTim Machan (Washington): The sophomore defensive back tied a school record with three interceptions in the Bears’ 34-3 win at Westminster College (MO).  Machan, who leads the team and the UAA with four interceptions, was part of a defense that held Westminster to 41 yards rushing and 197 yards of total offense.

Ryan Verissimo (Chicago): The sophomore kicker converted five of six extra-point attempts and averaged 37.5 yards on four punts, including a career-long of 51 yards, as the Maroons kicked off their 2007 campaign with a 41-10 win over host Concordia University.

The senior running back rushed for a career-high 128 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown in the Bears’ 34-3 win at Westminster College (MO). Murphy leads the team, averaging 93.5 yards per game.

MMDan Whalen (Case): The sophomore quarterback threw for 200-plus yards for the second consecutive week in leading the Spartans to a 45-6 victory over Denison University. Whalen completed 17 of 29 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown, while running 37 yards on seven carries with a touchdown.

DEFENSE

Brian Calderone (Case): The defensive end was stellar for the Spartans in a 45-6 triumph over Denison University, registering five tackles (1.5 for lost yardage), assisting on a sack, and forcing a fumble that was returned for a 55-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Through two games, Calderone has 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

MMMike DeNoma (Chicago): The junior linebacker made seven tackles, including three tackles-for-loss and a sack, in helping the Maroons hold Concordia University to 181 yards of total offense in a 41-10 victory.

Matt Adams (Carnegie Mellon): The senior punter averaged 39.6 yards on nine punts in the Tartans 16-6 win against Grove City College.  Adams placed two punts inside the Wolverines 20-yard line and recorded a 50-yard punt.

MM Luiz Goncalves (Case): The junior returned three punts for 44 yards, including a long return of 25, as the Spartans posted a 45-6 win over Denison University. Goncalvez also registered an interception for the second straight week, picking off a Denison pass with 1:53 remaining in the third quarter and returning it 53 yards for a touchdown.

UAA Athlete of the Week

OFFENSE
MM Buck Smith (Washington):
The junior quarterback completed 27 of 40 passes for a career-high 276 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Bears to a 41-28 victory over Lake Forest College in the season opener.  Smith and the Bears totaled 434 yards of offense in the victory, their highest total since tallying 454 yards against LaGrange College on Oct. 7, 2006.

MM Robert Gimson (Carnegie Mellon): The senior halfback ran for a career-high 185 yards on 16 carries and scored a touchdown to help lead the Tartans to a 33-10 victory over the University of Rochester.  Gimson headed a backfield that ran for 445 of the Tartans’ 499 yards of total offense on the day.

MM Jon Scholl (Carnegie Mellon): The senior defensive back registered a career-high 14 tackles, including eight solo and 1.5 tackles for lost yardage, as the Tartans kicked off the 2007 season with a 33-10 win at the University of Rochester.  Scholl also forced a fumble as the Tartans’ defense held the Yellowjackets to 44 yards on the ground and 186 yards of total offense.


SPECIAL TEAMS

MM Matt Adams (Carnegie Mellon): The senior punter completed four punts averaging 46.0 yards in the Tartans 33-10 win at the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon.  Adams placed two punts inside the Yellowjackets 20-yard line and recorded a 61-yard punt, his second longest for his career.

The sophomore quarterback threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns and carried the ball eleven times for 45 yards in a 37-15 victory over Oberlin College. Whalen also averaged 36.4 yards on five punts, including three inside of the Oberlin 20-yard-line.

MM Nick Gialessas (Washington):
The sophomore defensive lineman made three tackles, including 1.5 tackles for lost yardage, and blocked two extra points in the 41-28 victory at home against Lake Forest College.

MM Luiz Goncalves (Case): The junior defensive back made three tackles, assisted on three others, and registered an interception during a 37-15 triumph over Oberlin College. Goncalves was an integral part of a defense that held the Yeoman to 22 rushing yards and 181 total yards.

SPECIAL TEAMS
MM Tommy Bawden (Washington):
The junior averaged 31.0 yards per punt in the Bears’ 41-28 win over Lake Forest College. Bawden, who was punting in his first career game, pinned the Foresters inside the 10-yard-line on two of three punts.

CARNEGIE MELLON TABBED AS UAA FOOTBALL PRESEASON FAVORITE

MMCarnegie Mellon University, which posted a perfect 10-0 regular season record en route to a berth to the NCAA Division III Championship, will start the 2007 season as the favorite of the coaches to defend its University Athletic Association football championship.  The Tartans, whose last top UAA preseason honor came during the 1998 season, collected three first-place votes in tallying 15 points.

MMEight-time Association champion Washington University and Case Western Reserve University were the coaches pick to finish tied for second place, each totaling nine points with the Bears picking up the remaining first-place vote. The University of Chicago was chosen to finish fourth in this year’s standings, earning three points.

MMLast fall, Carnegie Mellon snapped a six-year Association draught by qualifying for the NCAA Division III playoffs.  The Tartans opened with a 21-0 triumph over Millsaps College (another Association first), before dropping a 37-0 second-round defeat to eventual semifinalist Wesley College.

MMThe UAA schedule kicks off on October 13 with all four teams competing in annual rival series – Washington traveling to Chicago for the 21st annual Founders Trophy game, while Case plays at Carnegie Mellon in the 22nd annual “Academic Bowl” matchup.
