UAA Athlete of the Week

MMMHany Abdallah (NYU): The senior captain finished second in a field of 271 competitors in helping the host Violets defend their team title at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Championships at Van Cortlandt Park.  Abdallah ran the 8,000-meter course in a time of 24:29.7 as NYU totaled 37 points in the 39-team field, earning a berth to the NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Championship in Northfield, MN.

MMBrian Harvey (Carnegie Mellon): The junior captured the men’s 8,000-meter individual title at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championships in Bethlehem, PA, leading the Tartans to a third-place finish in the 41-team field and an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III championships in Northfield, MN.  Harvey completed the race in a personal best time of 24:44, becoming the first Carnegie Mellon runner to win a regional meet.


Honor Roll

MMRyan McCarl (Chicago): The senior turned in a national-qualifying and school record-setting performance as the Maroons captured 12th place at the 35-team NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship in Oshkosh, WI.  McCarl placed seventh among 258 competitors with an eight-kilometer time of 24:32, the fastest time by a Chicago runner at that distance.

MMDominic Smith (Case): The junior placed eighth out of 245 runners at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships in Grand Rapids, MI. Smith finished the 8,000-meter race with a time of 25:12.10 to qualify individually for the NCAA Division III Championships in Northfield, MN.

MMVikram Srivastava (Emory): The junior finished seventh in a field of 170 runners at the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional Championships in Newport News, VA, helping the Eagles share top team honors with Rhodes College and earn a berth to the NCAA Division III Championships in Northfield, MN. Srivastava was the top Emory runner, completing the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:18 en route to All-Region accolades.

NYU DOMINATES TO SUCCESSFULLY DEFEND UAA TEAM TITLE

MMBOSTON  —  New York University, ranked second nationally among NCAA Division III teams by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCAA), used a dominating performance from its entire lineup to successfully defend its team championship at the 2007 University Athletic Association Cross Country Championships hosted by Brandeis University at Franklin Park in Boston, MA.

MMWith a mix of heavy and steady rain showers throughout the meet, Violet runners took the top three spots in the 78-runner field, with senior Ryan Williams claiming the men’s individual title with a time of 25:02.  Junior Jesse Schneider was four seconds behind at 25:06, while senior Hany Abdallah, the 2005 UAA champion, was one second behind.  NYU James McCarthy and Spencer Popeson finished sixth and eighth, respectively, to give NYU 20 points in the team scoring, which tied for the second-lowest team score in Association championship history.

MMThe top seven finishers individually garnered first-team All-UAA honors, while runners finishing 8-14 earned second team accolades.

MMCarnegie Mellon University, ranked 17th nationally in Division III, finished second with 68 points, receiving All-UAA performances from junior Brian Harvey with his fourth-place showing (25:16) and a tenth-place finish from graduate student Geoff Misek (25:49). Case Western Reserve University, which received a fifth place finish from junior Dominic Smith (25:21), and Emory University, whose top individual showing came from sophomore Paul Winterhalter in 11th place (25:50), rounded out the top four teams.

MMThe remaining teams, in order, were host Brandeis University (124), Washington University (131), the University of Rochester (153), and the University of Chicago (171). Each team had at least one runner finishing among the top 14 to earn All-UAA recognition.

MMMekonen Gendebo of Brandeis University was honored as the UAA Rookie of the Year as the top freshman finisher, completing the 8,000-meter race in ninth place with a time of 25:47.  He is only the second Brandeis runner to be honored as top rookie since the UAA started the award in 2000.

UAA Athlete of the Week

MM Ryan Williams (NYU): The senior finished second in a field of 358 runners to lead the second-ranked Violets to the team title at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh/Brooks Invitational.  Williams ran the 8,000-meter course in 24:10.04, finishing behind the individual champion from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. NYU totaled 68 team points to top the 22-team field, which included four NCAA Division III teams ranked among the top 15 nationally.


Honor Roll

MMMekonen Gendobo (Brandeis): The freshman placed 24th overall and sixth among NCAA Division III runners at the University of Albany Invitational. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:01, helping the Judges to a fifth-place finish (second among Division III schools entered).

MMBrian Harvey (Carnegie Mellon): The junior was the medalist in the men's 8,000-meter race during the Carnegie Mellon University Invitational, completing the course in 25:39.96 as the host Tartans captured the team title in the 23-team field. MMPatrick Hughes (Rochester): The senior finished 15th out of 150 runners at the University of Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational, completing the 8,000-meter race in a time of 26:27 in leading the host team to a fourth-place finish out of 13 schools with 95 points.

MMRyan McCarl (Chicago): The senior finished in 11th place as the Maroons placed sixth among 17 teams at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside/Lucian Rosa Invitational.  McCarl clocked a time of 26:06 on the eight-kilometer course.

UAA Athlete of the Week

MM Hany Abdallah (NYU): The senior claimed the individual title in the men’s 8,000-meter race at the New York Metropolitan Cross Country Championships in Riverdale, NY, leading the Violets, the lone NCAA Division III team in the nine-team field, to top honors.  Abdallah, who held the lead for almost the entire race, topped a field of 140 runners with a time of 26:00.2.


Honor Roll

MM Michael Rothbart (Emory): The senior finished 19th in a field of 193 competitors at the St. Olaf College Pre-National Meet in Northfield, MN. Competing on the same course that will play host to next month's NCAA Division III meet, Rothbart completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 28L02.3, helping the Eagles to a two-way tie for seecond place with Grinnell College in the 15-team field.

MM Dominic Smith (Case): The junior finished eighth in a field of 259 competitors from All NCAA Divisions and NAIA schools at the All-Ohio Championships in Delaware, OH, helping the Spartans to an 11th-place overall finish (39 teams) and a fourth-place showing among NCAA Division III teams. Smith was the top Division III finisher in the field with a time of 26:14.4.

UAA Athlete of the Week

MM Dominic Smith (Case): The junior placed seventh out of 233 runners in the men’s gold division race at the 35th annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational.  Competing among a field of runners from all NCAA Divisions, NAIA, and Canada, Smith completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 24:59, leading the Spartans to a ninth-place finish out of 21 teams.  His time is the fastest to date at the distance among UAA runners this season.


Honor Roll

MM Brian Harvey (Carnegie Mellon): The junior turned in a 86th place finish in a field of 286 individuals during the Brooks/Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University. Competing against schools from all NCAA divisions, Harvey completed the 8,000-meter race in 25:44 as the Tartans finished 19th out of 41 teams.

MM Ryan McCarl (Chicago): The senior finished 44th in a field of 234 runners in the men's gold division at the 35th annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational, leading the Maroons to a 13th-place finish out of 21 teams. McCarl finished the 8,000-meter race in a time of 26:00.

MM Jesse McDaniel (Washington): The senior was top finisher for the Bears in the men's maroon division (NCAA Division III teams) at the University of Minnesota/Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, MN.  McDaniel finished 10th overall with a time of 26:20 on the 8,000-meter course, helping the Bears to a sixth-place finish out of 34 teams.

MMMark Stevens (Rochester): The senior was the top finisher for the Yellowjackets at the State University of New York at Geneseo Invitational, finishing 14th out of 217 runners with a time of 26:21.7 in the 8,000-meter race. Rochester finished third out of 15 teams.

UAA Athlete of the Week

MM Jesse Schneider (NYU): The junior earned his first collegiate victory, outdistancing a field of 216 runners to capture the Connecticut College Invitational.  Schneider ran the 8,000-meter course in 25:02 in helping the second-ranked Violets to top team honors in the 19-team field, which included two nationally ranked NCAA Division II teams and a Division I program.


Honor Roll

MM Dan Gardner (Chicago): The junior finished seventh among a field of 123 competitors at the Lake Forest College Forester Invitational, leading the Maroons to top team honors in the 12-team meet. Gardner clocked a time of 26:55 on the eight-kilometer course.

MM Dominic Smith (Case): The junior was the top individual finisher in a field of 94 runners at the College of Wooster Invitational, helping the Spartans to a second-place finish. Smith completed the 8,000-meter race in a time of 26:27 for his first career meet victory.

MM Paul Winterhalter (Emory): The sophomore finished 27th in a field of 91 competitors from mostly NCAA Division I schools at the University of Georgia Bulldog Stampede, helping the Eagles to a fourth-place showing in the 10-team field. Winterhalter covered the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:53.9.

UAA Athlete of the Week

MM Dominic Smith (Case): The junior finished fifth in a field of 140 runners at the Calvin College Invitational, helping the Spartans to a fifth-place finish in the ten-team field.  Smith recorded a personal best time of 25:15 on the 8,000-meter course, 24 seconds behind the champion.


Honor Roll

MM Breck Fresen (Carnegie Mellon): The junior finished sixth out of 79 runners at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Invitational, helping the Tartans to a second-place finish. Fresen completed the 8,000-meter race in a time of 27:29.

MM Corey Kubatzky (Washington): The senior finished second among 56 competitors at the Maryville University (MO) Invitational, helping the Bears to top team honors in the four-team meet. Kubatzky completed the 5,000-meter race in a time of 16:39.24.

MM Mike Rothbart (Emory): The senior finished 11th out of 172 runners at the Georgia State University Invitational, helping the Eagles to a seventh-place finish out of 18 teams. Rothbart completed the 8,000-meter race in a time of 27:35.2.

MM Mark Stevens (Rochester): The senior finished tenth out of 254 runners at the New York University Invitational and Pre-Regional Preview. Stevens posted a time of 25:57 in the 8,000-meter race to lead the Yellowjackets to a fifth-place finish among Atlantic region teams.

MM Ryan Williams (NYU): The senior finished second out of 238 runners in the invitational 8,000-meter race at the New York University Invitational and Pre-Regional Preview. Williams’ time of 25:55.2 helped the Violets to the team title (out of 23 teams) with 42 points.

UAA Athlete of the Week

MM Mark Stevens (Rochester): The senior finished third out of 76 runners at the Rochester Institute of Technology Quadrangular Meet.  Stevens finished forty seconds behind the winner with a time of 26:17 in the 8,000-meter race as the Yellowjackets took top honors with 28 points, placing five runners among the top eight and seven among the first 11 finishers.

UAA Athlete of the Week

MM Ryan McCarl (Chicago): The senior finished second overall and led five Maroons among the top 11 finishers as the University of Chicago opened its 2007 season with a first-place showing at the Elmhurst College Earlybird Invitational.  McCarl clocked a time of 19:07.77 on the six-kilometer course, placing him just 2.62 seconds off the pace of the top finisher.  Chicago topped the 16-team field with 36 points.

MM Dominic Smith (Case): The Junior finished fourth in a field of 152 competitors at the seventh annual Bill Sudeck Classic hosted by Case.  Smith led the charge for the Spartans with a time of 26:17.0 over the 8,000-meter course, helping the squad to a third place finish in a field of 11 teams.


Honor Roll

MM Calvin Lee (NYU): The sophomore registered his finest collegiate performance to-date with a fifth-place finish at the Monmouth University Kickoff. Lee finished the 6,000-meter race in a time of 19:19 in leading the Violets, one of three NCAA Division III teams entered, to the team title in the eight-team field with 40 points.

MM Jesse McDaniel (Washington): The senior was the top finisher for the Bears at the season-opening Washington University Early Bird Meet. McDaniel finished the eight-kilometer race in fifth place out of 124 runners with a time of 26:25.27, helping Washington to top team honors.

MM Paul Norton (Brandeis): The freshman was the Judges’ top finisher as they opened the season with a 28-31 win over NCAA Division II neighbor Bentley College. He completed the 6,000-meter race in 20:15.

MM Michael Rothbart (Emory): The senior turned in a solid performance at the University of South Invitational, helping the Eagles to a second-place finish out of 17 teams.  Rothbart paced the Emory contingent of runners in the 8,000-meter race, finishing eighth out of 161 competitors with a time of 27:12.93.
